Arm Contouring
Massive weight loss, weight fluctuations and aging can have adverse effects on the appearance of the arms. The presence of excess skin and/ or excess fat tissue can be unsightly. In addition, it may make it difficult to wear certain types of shirts or sleeves. Rejuvenating the arms can be a very satisfying and pleasing procedure.
Techniques
Arm rejuvenation can be accomplished through liposuction, direct removal or a combination of both. In general, liposuction will work well for someone who is young, has good skin elasticity and a small to moderate amount of excess fat. Direct removal is best for someone who may not have very good skin elasticity and has an excess amount of extra skin and fat tissue. For someone with a large amount of extra skin and fat, both liposuction and direct removal may be needed. We design the incisions so that the scar is not noticeable when the arms are at the sides. The appropriate procedure can only be determined after a complete consultation.
Recovery
The recovery process depends on which procedure is done. In general, a drain will need to be used and a compressive arm bandage will need to be worn. Both the drain and the bandages are usually needed for a week. During the first week, arm activity needs to be very limited. Most people resume light arm activites after 5-7 days. The range of motion and strength increases significantly after that. Most people are able to resume their full level of arm moevements and activity after about 2-3 weeks. The scars, which are initially red and raised, will fade considerably after 2-3 months. Most scars become light and flat after a total of 6-12 months. Of note is that the scars are designed to be inconspicuous when the arms are at the sides.
Results
This is a woman in her 40's who lost weight after a gastric bypass procedure. She was unhappy with the appearance of her arms. We performed a brachioplasty. The "After" pictures show a significantly improved appearance of her arms. The excess skin and fat has been removed. We carefully plan the scar so that it is hidden from view when the arms are at the sides, or up as they are in these pictures. Our goal is to create smooth and improved contours of the arms. These pictures were taken approximately 6 weeks after surgery.
