Welcome to your Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation® (LVR®) guide. Here, you will be able to familiarize yourself with the procedure, in which the media commonly refers to as vaginal rejuvenation in the media, and how you can attain a satisfying result. However, it is important to understand that the information provided is in no way a substitute of your consultation. You may wish to make note of any questions you want to ask during your visit.
The most common Female Genital Plastic Surgery procedure, Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation® is often sought by women because they want to enhance or improve sexual gratification. Additionally, women who suffer from stress urinary incontinence (involuntary loss of urine with laughing, coughing, sneezing, exercising etc.) have found that they greatly benefit from the LVR® procedure.
Commonly, those who have had children look for a solution to rejuvenate the vagina and achieve the best sexual experience possible. For those who have not had children, there are solutions available through design modification to accomplish their desires. When vaginal relaxation occurs, the muscles are relaxed and have poor tone, strength, and control, while the internal and external diameters increase. Also, the muscles of the perineum weaken and are poorly supported. Under these circumstances, the vagina is no longer at its optimum physiological state, which can result in the diminished sensual side of sexual gratification.
Vaginal muscle tone, strength, and control can be effectively enhanced with Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation®. Furthermore, the perineal body is strengthened, and the internal and external vaginal diameters will also effectively decrease. As sexual gratification is directly related to the amount of frictional forces generated, LVR® techniques can accomplish this through gentle precision cutting with controlled accuracy; this results in relatively bloodless surgery. Rapid healing and the resuming of daily activities in a short period of time may be anticipated after LVR® pioneered techniques. Physically healthy women with realistic goals are the best candidates for this procedure.
What happens during the procedure? Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation® is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local with pudendal block (nerve block to numb the entire vagina and vulva), IV sedation with pudendal, twilight with pudendal, epidural, and general anesthesia. The procedure can last between 1 hour to 1 ½ hours depending on the extent of the vaginal relaxation and whether both the top (anterior) and bottom (posterior) walls/muscles are treated.
The first step is to administer a pudendal block to provide 18 to 24 hours post-operative pain control anesthesia. Then a tumescent fluid (mixture of local anesthetics and adrenaline) is injected into the anterior and posterior vaginal walls to assist in the bloodless LVR® technique. A special laser is used to perform the “proprietary” LVR® technique – cutting and dissecting. According to the specifications and desires of the patient, sutures are used to tighten the muscles of the upper/anterior (if required), lower/posterior, and perineum. Upon completion of the LVR® a vaginal pack is placed and you are transferred to the recovery room for 1 to 2 hours. Patients are then released into the custody of an adult to go home.
Some suggestions to help you prepare for surgery: It is important that you be open and honest during your consultation; be sure to provide all of your medical history and list all of the medications, vitamins, and herbs you are taking (even if you don’t think they’re important). Here are some tips that may help you shorten your recovery time and decrease the risk of complications.
Some bruising, swelling and pain after your procedure should be expected. You will have a vaginal pact (white gauze) outside the opening of the vagina, which is to be removed the morning following surgery (instructions will be given). Swelling should subside within two to four weeks; to minimize swelling, apply ice packs to the perineum off and on for the first 48 hours. Pain medication will be prescribed to control any discomfort; however, be sure to contact us immediately if you begin to have severe pain. Note that the pain medications can cause constipation (it is the most common complaint) and you should use a stool softener such as Colace, drink plenty of fluids, and eat fruits and vegetables to help to keep the stools soft. Patients who have hemorrhoids can on rare occasions see a post-surgical flare up, which can be treated with medications. The hemorrhoid or peri-anal swelling condition will resolve in 10 to 14 days. It is important that you take all medications as prescribed.
The recovery process is different for everyone, but you should be up and walking around within a day after your LVR® procedure. Showering can be resumed on the second or third day following surgery; however, you should refrain from baths for four weeks. Is it recommended that you not wear thong underwear and tight-fitting clothing for four weeks. You may return to work and usual activities one week post-surgery. Strenuous physical activities should be limited over the next two or three weeks as the treated areas may remain very sensitive. You may gradually return to activities such as lifting and light exercise, but avoid any high impact activities for approximately one month. Jogging and bouncing activities should be avoided for up to six weeks. These steps will help you avoid stress to the treated areas and allow time to heal and recover. Sex may be resumed in six weeks.
